Staff shortages endanger northern health care sector

The care and welfare sector in the Northern Netherlands is at risk due to the growing shortage on the labor market. The expected shortage of HBO nurses in the region can amount to almost 8 percent of the number of employed HBO nurses in 2015. All this emerges from the publication “Healthcare market and welfare 2017” of Zorgplein Noord. The most vulnerable positions are hbo nurses (now a shortage of 290 jobs increasing to 540 in 2020) and doctoral assistants mbo 4 (now a shortage of 30 against 180 in 2020).

CureTrack delivers UMCG logistics efficiency based on real-time data

The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) started in 2015 with the implementation of CureTrack, a smart automation concept from CureTrack from Heerenveen, specialized in logistics processes in healthcare provision. The RTLS system (Real Time Location System) provides real-time usage data to efficiently and patient-oriented manage logistical flows of medical devices. Main profit: more economical inventory management, reduction of search times, reduction of operational costs and assurance of cleaning and maintenance procedures.

How efficiently is medical equipment used?

Despite the presence of a nursing warehouse with a pool system, Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis was convinced that medical equipment could be used even more efficiently. From a proof-of-concept measurement, in which 200 devices received an RFID tag, it can be concluded that a significant reduction in equipment is indeed possible. PrefaceMost medical equipment is rarely used continuously. Sometimes there are good reasons for this, such as being available for emergencies, but usually it is less clear how the use of equipment actually relates to its presence (and numbers).
